Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art presents A story within a story… in five exhibition venues: Röda Sten Konsthall, Göteborgs Konsthall, Hasselblad Center, 3:e Våningen, and KKP Galleri. This edition, curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, presents thirty-three artists and artist collectives whose works explores the possibility of imagining history as a participatory experience.
Taking Umberto Eco’s notion of the “open work” as a conceptual backdrop and curatorial methodology, this edition of GIBCA features artists who interrogate the systems of power behind the production of history. The artworks presented explore collective and individual memories; rescue events and protagonists that have fallen into historical oblivion; and propose the formulation of new social imaginaries.
The artworks featured at Hasselblad Center offer the most personal approaches of addressing the biennial’s focus on history making. Many pieces explore a particular moment in time, a memory, or an archive, in order to convey ideas that are larger than the entity or issue itself. The narratives offered here address archival accounts of all kinds – private vs. public, individual vs. collective, past vs. present – intertwining the meanings of history and story and their respective connotations.
The artists included at the Hasselblad Center are:
Arvo Leo, Inmaculada Salinas, Jacob Kirkegaard, Leslie Hewitt, Phoebe Boswell, Sara Jordenö, Theo Eshetu
