The Hasselblad award was presented for the eighth time on Monday 26 September 1988. The award winner, Edouard Boubat, received the award from Her Royal Highness Princess Lilian, at a ceremony at the Röhsska museum in Göteborg. The award sum was FRF 200,000. In conjunction with the ceremony an exhibit of the award winner’s photographs was displayed at the Röhsska museum.

Edouard Boubat has been renowned since the 1940s for his images. He is a humanist and a unique creator of images that defy categorization. Boubat is a storyteller who wants to capture people, their behavior and their everyday lives on film. He depicts people and scenes with warmth and his pictures speak of love, joy and human pride. Boubat’s first known photograph is a picture of a small French girl dressed in wilted leaves. It was taken in 1946 when he was 23 years old and it captured the atmosphere in France after the end of the Second World War.
