The idea of documentary photography as a neutral registration of reality has long since been subverted, but the challenge of portraying social issues remains current. The artists in the exhibition investigate the possibilities and difficulties of photography to depict the other, they examine the medium’s altered function in society where surveillance plays an increasingly large role, and they deromanticise mythical, established genres such as war reportage or landscape photography. Many of them highlight conflict-filled situations through art activism. Some are interested in language and images as social constructions. A common theme in many of the works is the problematisation of photography’s claims to reality and the conspicuousness of the photographer behind the camera.

The exhibition is centered on the coveted Hasselblad Foundation Victor Fellowships. Two participants will be offered the opportunity of further studies and a studio residency in countries outside the Nordic region: Glasgow School of Art or the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham and the
International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York.
