Book Launch: Striving for Independence
In connection with the exhibition Women Behind the Camera 1848–1968, the Hasselblad Foundation invites you to the launch of the book Striving for Independence: Women Pioneers in Early Nordic Studio Photography, 1860–1920 by Sigrid Lien and Mette Sandbye, published by De Gruyter.
.
Striving for Independence: Women Pioneers in Early Nordic Studio Photography, 1860–1920 is an international anthology on women studio photographers in the Nordic countries between 1860 and 1920. Through new research and unique visual material, the book highlights female photographers as entrepreneurs, artists, and pioneers at a time when photography became a path toward economic and personal independence. The publication offers new perspectives on Nordic photographic history and sheds light on women whose significance has long been overshadowed in historical narratives.
.
During the evening, we will meet the book’s editors in a conversation about their research, the work behind the publication, and the photographic pioneers featured in the book.
There will also be an opportunity to purchase the book in the Gothenburg Museum of Art shop during the evening.
