In connection with the exhibition Women Behind the Camera, 1848–1968, the Hasselblad Foundation presents a lecture by Karl-Magnus Johansson on photography, gender and archives.

Women are underrepresented in broader historical narratives. However, by delving into the preserved traces found in archives, it is often possible to complement and challenge prevailing narratives by bringing women’s lives and work to the forefront. In this lecture, Karl-Magnus Johansson will discuss the potential of archives to make women’s lives visible, both behind and in front of the camera.

Karl-Magnus Johansson is Senior Archivist at the National Archives in Gothenburg and an honorary doctor at the University of Gothenburg. He has published books at the intersection of archives and contemporary art, as well as articles on topics including co-creation, microhistory and visual archival materials.

Date: Wednesday, 2 September
Time: 17:00
Location: Hasselblad Center

The lecture will be held in Swedish and is included in the admission ticket.
