The Inner Journey
November 20–January 19
Lennart Nilsson’s revolutionary photographs of life before birth became a sensation when “The Drama of Life before Birth” was published in the Life Magazine in 1965. The series was the first photographic visualization of the human evolution. His book, A Child is Born, was published the same year, and has been translated into over 20 languages and sold several tens of millions of copies. This exhibition presents a selection of classic photographs from the series included in the Hasselblad Foundation Collection.
In the early 1940s, Lennart Nilsson began his photographic career and worked for various Swedish newspapers with photo-essays and portrait photography, including an acclaimed photo-essay about the everyday life of a midwife in the northern Lapland. This series of images—also included in the Hasselblad Foundation Collection—was shown in the exhibition Still Life/Work Life—from the Hasselblad Foundation Collection at the Hasselblad Center, during the spring 2013.
In conjunction with the exhibition The Nature of Photography/The Photography of Nature by the Hasselblad Award Winner 2013, Joan Fontcuberta, the Hasselblad Foundation wishes to draw attention to the very first Hasselblad Award Winner, Lennart Nilsson (b. 1922), who received the award in 1980. Fontcuberta’s questioning of the truth claims of photography sheds new light on Lennart Nilsson’s scientific images. In the meeting with the fictional worlds of Fontcuberta, some ambiguity arise facing Nilsson’s observations of the human inner space.
