The Foundation’s citation:

Since the 1950s Christer Strömholm has been one of Scandinavia's leading photographers, and he was the first post-war photographer to gain international renown. In the early fifties he became a member of the German group Fotoform, and while living in Paris at the end of that decade he developed a photographic language analogous to existentialism. Strömholm's pictures have made a major contribution to the establishment of photography as an independent art form in Europe. In addition, in his capacity as a legendary teacher of photography, he has influenced generations of Scandinavian photographers.
